Vail Christian hits 2 big free throws late to down Soroco boys

— The Soroco High School boys basketball team lost a district-closing heartbreaker Saturday afternoon, but the Rams’ season isn’t done just yet.

Down by four points late against Vail Christian in the District 5 third-place game, the Rams’ Storm Veilleux nailed two big field goals to get his team up by one with 15 seconds to go.

Soroco committed a foul inside 5 seconds, the Saints hit both free throws, and the Rams couldn’t get the ball past halfcourt on the ensuing possession as they lost, 42-41.

“We started the game well,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said. “We had a great first quarter and first half and were up by four at halftime. The third quarter, we only scored three points.”

Hayes said his Rams shored up some of the offensive woes it went through the night before in a loss to Meeker, but that lackluster third quarter and hitting only one of seven free throws proved costly.

“A lot of the little things let this one get away,” Hayes said.

Eric Logan led the way in scoring for Soroco, pouring in a team-high 12 points. Warren Hayes pitched in 10 points.

The Rams will now prep for the upcoming regional tournament, where they’ll likely play either Meeker or Paonia, which played for the District 5 championship Saturday afternoon.
