Vail assessing flood damage

Gore Creek hit record 2,350 cubic feet per second Sunday

Dominique Taylor/Vail Daily

— Flood waters in some parts of Vail earlier this week exceeded 100-year-flows, the Federal Emergency Management Agency reported.

And while a flood warning has been lifted for the area, Vail Fire Chief Mark Miller advises residents and guests to stay away from the streams because of higher than average flows, unstable banks and hidden debris in the water.

The most significant damage includes the loss of a recreation path bridge near Aspen Court in East Vail and damage to a section of the Dowd Junction path retaining wall.

Damage to 15 residential units on Bighorn Road, Lupine Drive and Juniper Lane, plus one business in Vail Village has been documented with reports of water damage, mold and possible foundation damage. An estimate for the total dollar loss will be prepared once the water has receded.

The Dowd Junction recreation path will reopen at 7 a.m. today as conditions permit. The Katsos Ranch section of the Gore Valley Trail in East Vail also will reopen today. The section of the Gore Valley Trail between West Forest Road and the Glen Lyon Office Building is closed indefinitely because of an undermined bridge abutment. The detour route is along the South Frontage Road.

Public safety responders continue to remain on high alert in the event that water levels rise following Sunday’s record flows of 2,350 cubic feet per second on Gore Creek at the Red Sandstone/Eagle River Water & Sanitation District monitoring station. The high waters have been triggered by unseasonably warm temperatures that are melting snow far more quickly than normal.
