U.S. Postal Service asks for patience as workers process a record number of packages in Steamboat

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The U.S. Postal Service said its employees are working around the clock in Steamboat Springs to make sure a record number of packages are delivered ahead of the Christmas holiday.

Colorado’s U.S. Postal Service spokesman David Rupert acknowledged Friday the volume of mail and packages during the holiday season can lead to some delays in mail delivery at Steamboat’s downtown post office.

But he refuted claims from some Steamboat mail customers that mail delivery has stopped completely this week at boxes in the downtown post office so that workers could focus on the package deliveries.

“All the mail is being delivered,” Rupert said. “But mail may be delivered in your box at a time later than you’re accustomed to.”

Rupert said it’s a challenging time of year for all of the Postal Service employees, and the agency appreciated patience from the community as workers deliver a record amount of packages.

The Postal Service this fall estimated it would deliver more than 15 billion pieces of mail this holiday season.

It also was expecting to deliver 850 million packages between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

Some downtown P.O. Box customers reached out to Steamboat Today on Friday claiming they had not received mail for as many as three days and had heard the downtown post office had stopped delivering mail to the downtown P.O. boxes because there weren’t enough postal workers to handle the influx of packages as well as the mail sorting.

The Postal Service said while package delivery is being prioritized in Steamboat, postal workers are still sorting and delivering mail to the boxes each day.

Rupert said a customer who regularly checks the box at 1 p.m. might find that they haven’t gotten their mail at the same time the next day due to the amount of mail and packages the post office is receiving.

Busy lines at the walk up window this time of year at the downtown post office also slow down the mail sorting and delivery.

“We have people sorting and boxing mail from early in the morning until later in the evening,” he said. “They are all working very hard to make sure that everyone has a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday.”

Rupert said the Postal Service is currently seeing a 10 percent increase in package volume nationwide and in Colorado.

“We have record parcel volumes in the nation. Record parcel volumes in Colorado, and record parcel volumes in Steamboat,” he said.
