Two Steamboat skiers earn big trips
Steamboat Springs — A strong week of competitions in Michigan earned a pair of Steamboat Springs skiers tickets for much longer trips.
Kathleen O’Connell, skiing for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, and Evan Weinman, skiing with Middlebury College, both shined during the USSA Cross Country U.S. Nationals this week in Houghton, Michigan, and at the end of the week each had been named to a U.S. team that will compete again this season.
O’Connell will travel to Europe to compete on the U.S. U18 Scandinavian Cup team, competing Feb. 1 through 11 in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden.
O’Connell ended up third in her division, easily giving her one of the spots, which go to the top six skiers.
Weinman, meanwhile, will compete in the World Junior Championships Jan. 28 through Feb. 9 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He secured his spot thanks in part to a strong showing in the U.S. Nationals classic skiing sprint race, where Weinman was the top-finishing junior skier.
This is the fourth consecutive year Steamboat skiers have skied their way on to at least one of those two national teams.
