Two injured in car accident

Milner, Oak Creek men suffer minor injuries in crash

Gary E. Salazar

— Two men were injured in a two-car accident early Thursday morning that reduced U.S. 40 west of Steamboat Springs to one lane for about a half-hour.

Erik Bertram, 31, of Milner and Ian Houston, 28, of Oak Creek were taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center following the accident that occurred at about 8:30 a.m.

Both men were treated at the hospital and later released, hospital spokeswoman Christine McKelvie said.

Bertram suffered a strained neck and Houston’s back was injured in the accident, which occurred at the intersection of U.S. 40 and Snow Bowl Plaza.

Steamboat Springs Sgt. Richard Brown said Bertram would be issued a citation for the accident.

Both men were traveling westbound on U.S. 40 when Bertram’s silver 1995 Ford Taurus rear-ended Houston’s 1993 maroon Pontiac Grand Am, Brown said.

“Houston was slowing down to make a left turn into the Snow Bowl Plaza when his car was hit,” Brown said.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue personnel responded to the accident and attended to both men.

After the collision, both cars came to a rest at the side of the westbound lane. The back end of the Grand Am was damaged. The Taurus’ front end had extensive damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

To keep traffic flowing through the area, Steamboat officers were placed at both ends of the road.

Eastbound and westbound traffic was let through the area by using one lane. After firefighters swept broken glass and other vehicle parts from the roadway, both lanes were reopened for traffic.
