Turn off outdoor irrigation by Sept. 16
Steamboat Springs and Mount Werner Water District are asking all residents and businesses that utilize city-provided water to turn off their outdoor irrigation systems starting Sept. 16 this year.
The Fish Creek Water Treatment plant will be closed from Sept. 16 to Nov. 25 for another round of improvements, and water will only be supplied via the Yampa Wells Treatment Plant.
Officials hope cooperation from residents, landscaping companies and HOAs to turn off outdoor irrigation systems can save 3-4 million gallons of water per day. Residents are asked to curb water consumption by limiting indoor water use, refraining from washing vehicles, and not hosing down sidewalks and driveways.
“This project requires the entire community working together to make it successful,” said Frank Alfone, general manager at the water district.
During the past two improvement projects that required a similar shutdown, the wells provided the necessary flows with the help of citizen water conservation.
Since the Yampa Wells source water carries more minerals than Fish Creek, customers may experience a slight difference in taste.
The water department will conduct extra monitoring of water use during the improvement project. Anyone can report water waste through the city’s online reporting system linked at Steamboatsprings.net/251/Water-Conservation.
