Tumminello sets record in time trial championships

There always are things you could have done differently, Lisa Renee Tumminello said Sunday, reflecting on her ride in the 6-, 12- and 24-Hour Time Trial Championships in Palm Springs, Calif., on Nov. 8.

If only that red light could have been avoided. Maybe a different wheel set would have made a difference. Could a different gear set have changed things?

“You have a lot of time to think about it,” Tumminello said about her race, 12 hours in the saddle peddling across the mostly flat California course.

A few tweaks may have helped, but all of that didn’t add up to enough to slow down the Steamboat Springs cyclist, who set a record in the 12-hour division of the cycling race.

She struggled against the wind and found herself wishing for a nice, long Colorado climb, but she still finished 220.5 miles. There were two loops, one gigantic 121 miles, and one short 15.8 miles. She burned through the big one, then rattled off shorter laps until she ran out of time.

“It was definitely fun,” she said.

She’d been expecting a large field of international athletes but actually only had one other woman in her category. That moved “winning” to the back burner — she did that easily, by nearly 70 miles, and beat two-thirds of the men’s field, too — and bumped “record setting” to the front. With her father stepping in to lend a hand as her crew, she did just that.

“Your goal is to set a record, to do something that might be a challenge for another woman in future years,” she said.

Maybe some of the small details she worried about during the race would have made a little difference, but she still managed her goal just fine.
