Triple Crown World Series opens in big weekend

— The Triple Crown World Series saw a little bit of everything during the opening week of action in Steamboat Springs.

Mixed in the 98 youth baseball teams were Bandits, Dodgers and a little bit of Magic in the division 2 play and Exterminators, Angels and Patriots competing for titles in division 1. All of those teams earned titles in the opening weekend.

“Everything went great,” said Sean Hardy, Triple Crown’s head of team sports and national director of baseball.

The La Costa Bandits topped the Fort Collins Cardinals and the Thornton Thunder en route to the championship game in the 9-year-old division.

In the finals, the Bandits topped the Friendswood Stangs to earn the title.

In the 12-year-old division, the Cat City Magic won six straight games to earn its title. The Cats topped the Southlake Rockhounds, New Mexico Hitmen and the Albuquerque Fireballs to take the title.

The Moreno Valley Dodgers completed the California sweep during the opening week by winning the 13-year-old title.

That team unseated the Burnsville Blaze, Blue Springs Slammers and Cy-fair Cyclones along the road to the championship game.

Once there, the California team topped the Fort Worth Falcons to become the third California team to win a Division 2 title during the opening week.

In Division 1, it was the Xterminators earning the 9-and-under title.

The Southern Californian team topped the SCV heat, West Covine Bombers and Predator Baseball to earn the title. The Bombers finished second and the heat placed third.

The Austin Slam Angels broke up the California party by topping the 15-year-old division. The Cen-Tex Braves and Team RBI, both from Texas, took second and third, respectively.

The final title of the weekend went to the East Cobb Patriots (blue) from Georgia The team topped the KC Angels to earn the world title. The East Cobb Patriots finished third in the division.

The Triple Crown World Series will continue this weekend with play for 10, 11, and 14 year olds in Division 2. Titles also will be up for grabs for 11, 14, and 18 year olds in Division 1 play. Hardy said this would be the biggest weekend of the world series, which is up 86 teams from last year.

More than 120 teams will open with skills tests and the parade of champions. The first games of the week are Wednesday.

The Triple Crown World Series runs three weekends in July and August and will bring 311 teams to town this year.
