Transit adds two bus routes

A City of Steamboat Springs bus makes its way along Hilltop Parkway on Tuesday. The city recieved a grant from the Federal Transit Administration and Color-ado Department of Transpotation to establish new routes.

— Steamboat Springs Transit once again served 1 million passengers this year.

In an effort to serve even more people, two bus routes have been added for winter.

The North Condo Purple Line now services the Rockies Condominiums, the Moraine Townhomes, the Porches, other properties north of Mount Werner Circle and Yampa Valley Medical Center. Every 20 minutes the bus will take riders to the ski area and shopping areas.

The Hilltop Connector Route is a trial route that has been long anticipated by residents of Hilltop Parkway, Tamarack Drive and Fish Creek Falls Road. The route is being funded by a federal grant, and the longevity of the route depends on the number of passengers that ride it this winter.

Steamboat Springs Transit will run as late as needed on New Year’s Eve.

“It’s our biggest night of the year,” said George Krawzoff, city transportation director. “We’ve carried as many as 10,000 people on that evening.”

People are cautioned to wear warm clothing to prepare for cold temperatures.

“We are very concerned about people’s well-being and will keep running until the crowds are down,” Krawzoff said. “We stop when we move the big crowds out, even if it’s 2:30 or 3 a.m.”

In response to some recent complaints about city buses not staying within their lanes, Krawzoff said bus drivers are required to stay 4 feet clear of parked cars and pedestrians.

“When the cars are out from the curb, we move out too.”

Residents should also know that all four of Steamboat Springs Transit buses this winter are MCI commuter coaches with forward facing and reclining cloth seats. Anyone commuting from Craig, Hayden or Milner will enjoy a warmer and more comfortable ride.
