— Stewards of a new trail maintenance endowment fund are partnering with the organizers of some sporting events, and taking other steps, to promote and boost the fund.

A Facebook page has been launched, and the organizers of the Run Rabbit Run race are offering to donate to the fund if volunteers donate their time to help clean up trails after the event.

“The more miles you volunteer to clean, the more money we can raise to permanently maintain our wonderful trails,” Helen Beall, of the Yampa Valley Community Foundation, wrote in an email blast about the endowment fund.

A Steamboat CycleArt auction also recently raised $3,671 for the fund.

The fund was launched last year to help maintain the miles and miles of new trails that are being built with lodging tax funds. It is held at the Yampa Valley Community Fund.

“We need to show that we as a community are invested in our trails and are willing to make sure they are taken care of,” said Winnie DelliQuadri, assistant to City Manager Gary Suiter. “That’s really what the trail maintenance endowment fund does.”

Through Aug. 11, the fund had raised $66,000 for non-motorized, multi-use trail upkeep in Routt and Moffat counties.

The creators of the fund hope it will generate at least $1 million in contributions in the next eight to 10 years.
