Town Challenge race cancelled

— Around and around they won’t go.

The Churn and Burn circuit race of the Town Challenge Mountain Bike race series was cancelled Wednesday night in the face of persistent rain and lightning. It was the second consecutive week the race, scheduled for Steamboat Ski Area, was called off because of weather, and now, it’s unlikely it will ever be run.

The event was to put riders on a comparatively short course on the lower slopes of Mount Werner, but require them to rack up two, three or four laps, depending on their classification. Series director David Stevenson said there are no current plans to reschedule the race.

The next event on the Town Challenge calendar is the Geronimo Glory XC, set for Wednesday at Emerald Mountain. The series will then return the following week, July 29, with the Storm Peak Hill Climb at Steamboat Ski Area.

Without the Churn and Burn circuit race, the series is back down to six races this year after trying to bump the schedule up to seven.
