Top riders ready for Challenge

John F. Russell

— The 600-foot-long tunnel of snow that put the word “super” into superpipe in Steamboat Springs will offer some of the best riders in the world one last chance to soar this Sunday.

The Mountain Dew Mavericks Superpipe Challenge will also give the local riders, and free skiers, an opportunity to pick up some serious cash prizes as the sun sets on the 2001-2002 ski season at Mount Werner.

The top snowboarder in the men’s division will pocket $1,000 in cash. The top woman boarder and top male skier will both collect $700 and the top woman skier will get a check for $300 from the event organizers for winning the event.

“Skiers and riders will be in for a long ride at the Mountain Dew Mavericks Superpipe Challenge,” John Asta said. Asta is the terrain park coordinator for the Steamboat Ski Area.

“Mavericks enables competitors to get almost twice as many hits as a conventional superpipe and is the ideal opportunity to showcase their skills.”

The Challenge will get started at 10 a.m. Sunday and it is expected to draw some of the top riders and free skiers in the country.

The event, however, is open to everybody. Participants may pre-register for the Challenge by calling Sara Barry at 871-5387, or on the day of the event at the Bear River Bar & Grill, which is located, at the base of the mountain in Gondola Square from 8 to 10 a.m. The entry fee is $30. Lift tickets are not included in the entry fee and must be purchased separately.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in all divisions. The awards ceremony will be held at the Bear River Bar & Grill immediately following the event.
