Top prizes offered at Town Challenge kick off

— New skis, an LCD television and a trip with Steamboat Powdercats are just a few of the items organizers are offering to entice skiers to come out for the Town Challenge kick off party Tuesday night.

Spokesperson Emily Serrell said there will be more than $2,500 in prizes up for grabs at this year’s party, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Steamboat Smokehouse.

“We’d like to encourage people to show up, bring friends, come with questions and have some eats and a few beers with us,” Serrell said.

To make the annual sign up and organizational meeting a little more appealing, organizers will hand out top prizes in a random drawing to skiers who sign up to take part in this year’s Town Challenge Series. But the kick off isn’t the only chance for racers to win prizes.

This year, organizers plan on handing out 10 pairs of race stock skies in random drawings following events. They will also give away a dozen helmets, nine pairs of ski poles and tuning supplies such as a waxing iron and waxing bench.

The prizes will not be linked to race results, but given away in drawings at the after-race parties.

“This is a crucial year for the series,” Serrell said. “We are hoping to revitalize the program and increase participation by giving away more prizes.”

Serrell said the party is a great place to catch up with other racers and hang out with friends. It’s also a chance to form teams or find a team to race with during the season.

Serrell said if racers want to be eligible for the prizes they will need to fill out registration forms, but it should be painless and quick.

She said a wide range of skiers take part in the annual series, which runs from December through March.

“Some of us precision-tune our skies and freeze out there in speed suits, but there are others who chew gum and listen to their iPods in the start gate,” she said.

The first race of this year’s Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Town Challenge Race Series, the Holmenkol Steamboat Ski and Bike Kare Giant slalom will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 30. The race will take place on the Sitz/See Me racecourse at the Steamboat Ski Area. This year’s series will include nine races.
