The Demons were the clear favorite and look poised to make a deep Class 4A state playoffs push, but Glenwood had trouble keeping its hands on the ball, giving up 23 turnovers to the Sailors. Steamboat Springs — 1. Soroco basketball program bounces back
The boys and girls Rams basketball teams won on the same evening for the first time since taking on rival Hayden at home Jan. 9. Although it was against a pair of reeling De Beque squads, Soroco handled its business at home. The girls cruised to a 73-15 win led by 49 combined points from their Big 3 in DaKota Bruner, Jessica Rossi and Briana Peterson. The boys blasted De Beque by 49 points. Eric Logan and Chance Beaty combined for 32 points.
2. Steamboat-Glenwood boys put on a show
The two teams knew it would be a dog fight, but for the sixth straight time in the regular season the Demons got the best of the Sailors. Steamboat looked promising down the stretch, aided by a late push from senior Austin Kerbs, but 4A Western Slope League leading scorer Cameron Horning gave his team a 40-37 advantage that would never be relinquished. The Sailors will have to wait until the regular-season finale to get revenge. The two teams play Feb. 14 in Glenwood.
3. Steamboat girls basketball falls big but shows fight
Call it sloppy play or an uncharacteristic night for the Glenwood Springs girls, but the Sailors could at least hang their hats on some inspired defense if not on the final score, 51-19. Glenwood coughed up 23 turnovers in the win, many forced by hustle plays from the likes of Maddison Clock, Jenna Miller and Savannah Bauknecht. Steamboat fell to 3-8 on the season, but travels to Battle Mountain this week to take on a Huskies team that is struggling just as much.
