Venture to the hot springs this holiday vacation for something to do aside from skiing or snowboarding.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — There’s more to Steamboat than its quintessential tree-lined, powdered-filled runs — which we hope to see more of this season.

Whether you’re looking to get outdoors or stay warm ‘n’ cozy, we’ve rounded up a sampling of non-skiing winter adventures in Routt County.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs

Whether local or visitor, most would agree that a trip to the Strawberry Park Hot Springs definitely is a must when in Steamboat. This local gem was rated among colorado.com’s top five hikes and hot springs. It is open year-round from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Shuttles are available, and are recommended given the winding road, which is slick and icy throughout much of the winter.

Local snowshoeing favorites include the Soda Creek Trail on Buffalo Pass and the Fish Creek Falls area, with its easy trails and beautiful views. Emerald Mountain snowshoe tours are offered through the local environmental organization Yampatika (970-871-9151, yampatika.org).

Dog Sledding Tours

Experience a winter wonderland via dog sled with one of Steamboat’s new dog-sledding companies, which include Grizzle-T Dog & Sled Works and Snow Buddy Dog Sled Tours.

Work out those kinks with a variety of classes in one of Steamboat’s 20 studios all over town to stay limber and strong during your outdoor pursuits.

Museums & Galleries

Steamboat’s colorful past and present is encapsulated at the Tread of Pioneers Museum and in galleries like Steamboat Art Museum, Center for Visual Arts, Gallery 89, Depot Art Center, Wild Horse Gallery and the Romick Gallery.

Hot Air Balloon

Looking for breathtaking views? Wild West Balloon Adventures (970-879-7219, wildwestballooning.com) offers balloon tours all winter long, complete with a Champagne toast after the early morning tour above the Yampa Valley

Ice fishing

Stagecoach Reservoir and Steamboat Lake are two of the places locals like to ice fish. Straightline Sports and Steamboat Flyfisher both provide guided ice-fishing excursions.

Rocky Mountain Ventures is the only permitted outfitter for guided rock climbing and ice climbing tours. All levels of climbers are welcome, kids and adults, and the company provides equipment and instruction for the climb up the frozen falls.

There are a number of places to go snowmobiling, and many locals find the wide expanses of Rabbit Ears to be the best spot to enjoy the sport. Explore magazine contributor Greg Johnson went up on Dunckley Pass in the Flat Tops last week, and local Danielle Zimmerer suggests calling Saddleback Ranch or Steamboat Snowmobile Tours for a guided snowmobile tour.

Skating & Broomball

For skating with family or friends, Howelsen Ice Arena is the place. You can even play broomball, played with six players on two teams. Using brooms, the players hit the ball around the rink and try to score goals. Players don’t wear skates but instead take to the ice on rubber-soled shoes.

For any activities at Howelsen Ice Arena, book 48 to 72 hours in advance by contacting 970-871-7033.
