— There were good games and bad through the weekend for the Hayden High School girls basketball team, but coach Michelle Wilkie said the one thing her team came away with was valuable experience.

That, and a win.

The Tigers got their first win of the season in a three-game stint at a tournament in Encampment, Wyoming, beating Hanna Elk Mountain High School 37-17.

“We played really well,” Wilkie said. “We had great shots, and we couldn’t miss, which was kind of nice, finally.”

If that game gave the team the win, the other two gave the experience.

Hayden lost to Rock River in a tight game, 39-36, then lost against the hosts, Encampment, 48-30.

Darian Murphy led the way against Hanna Elk Mountain, scoring 15, while Hannah Willkie added seven. Murphy also scored 12 against Encampment.

Kyra Bennett scored seven against Rock River, leading the way in a balanced scoring effort that included points from every player on the varsity roster.

“We missed some really easy shots underneath the basket, and we’ve got to nail those,” Michelle Wilkie said. “That’s our biggest thing right now. Our turnovers were pretty dang good. They’re improving. We just need to continue to step it up.”

The team is back in action at 7 p.m. Friday at home against North Park.
