As the Hayden track and field team approaches its Western Slope League and regional track meets, it is starting to increase its production.

The Tigers finished third in both team races at Saturday’s Phelan-Alex-ander Invitational hosted by Vail Christian, finishing behind West Grand and Soroco in each instance.

The girls scored 27 points in their field events, led by Kylee Sweetser’s second-place result in the triple jump. She jumped 30-2 1/2. Emily Whiteman finished second in the shot put, throwing 29-7 1/4. She also placed third in the discus, throwing 89-1.

Hayden’s Laura Zirkle finished second in the 3,200-meter run in 14 minutes, 45.30 seconds.

The Tigers also got three top-six showings in their three relays, including a runner-up finish from the 800-meter medley team. The quartet of Sweetser, Holli Salazar, Melissa Geis and Jessica Martin has been consistent through most of the season. On Friday, the team finished just behind Basalt in 2:02.02.

For the boys, senior Tyson Sweetser, who had been struggling in the discus, found his form in Eagle-Vail, throwing a season-best 141-1 to win the event. He also won the shot put, throwing 44-7 1/4. Tyson Sweetser was the only Hayden champion Saturday, but teammate Keenan Bruchez finished second in the discus, long jump and 110-meter hurdles.
