Three-year-old wanders down Lincoln Avenue

A 3-year-old girl was found walking by herself on Lincoln Avenue in downtown Steamboat Springs on Friday morning.

Before she was returned to her mother, the girl told police that she had wanted to go visit her sister at school.

About 10 a.m., a worker at Vino, a store at 435 Lincoln Ave., saw the girl, who was wearing pink pajamas, walking by herself. The worker brought the girl inside because it was obvious that she was too young to be alone, Steamboat Springs police Sgt. Joel Rae said.

The clerk called police and then asked the girl what she was doing, at which point she said she was trying to visit her sister.

When Rae arrived, he talked with the girl and had her direct him to her house. When the pair arrived at the girl’s home at nearby Westland Trailer Park on Yampa Avenue, Rae said the girl’s mother was frantically searching for her.

The mother told Rae that her daughter had been napping, so she fell asleep for five to 10 minutes, too. When she woke and went to check on the girl, she was gone.

The mother said she was especially frightened because earlier that morning her husband had seen a black bear outside of the trailer.

“Everything worked out OK,” Rae said. “That little girl decided to go on a journey.”
