Summertime in Routt County is a dream come true for outdoor enthusiasts. Our community offers an abundance of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, camping, rafting, etc. It is also a time when our youth are out of school and school-related sports, clubs and extracurricular activities. During the summer, youth seem to have more free time, and it is a peak season for teens to engage in risky behavior, such as underage drinking.

Often, parents may find themselves in a difficult position regarding whether to allow teens to attend a party where alcohol will likely be available. Some parents may elect to have the party in their own home rather than risk having their teens drink unsafely and unsupervised. Often, these parents have good intentions and believe that providing a safe home and a supervised party will teach youth how to drink responsibly, keep them from drinking in other places and hinder drinking and driving. There are many important reasons why this is not the right way to handle the underage drinking situation.

Parents who provide a place for their children to drink are sending underage teens a message that this behavior is acceptable. It is also illegal. The Steamboat Springs’ Social Host Ordinance, passed in 2009, holds adults accountable for allowing underage drinking parties in their homes. The SHO ordinance allows police to hold homeowners or hosts (including parents) responsible for underage drinking that occurs on their property or at their party.

Social Host fines in Steamboat start at $500 and can be as much as $1000. Penalties may also include jail time. Though the number of SHO citations in Steamboat Springs has decreased from 2014 to 2015, it is still a problem. This is a friendly reminder that the law is still in effect.

Many individuals who develop a substance use disorder start before the age of 18. According to drugabuse.gov, “15.2 percent of people who start drinking by age 14 eventually develop alcohol abuse or dependence.”

Remember, as a parent, it is your job to model responsible behavior for your teen. Make time to talk with your teens and discuss the consequences and health problems that can occur from underage drinking. Set clear rules, and make sure your teens understand what your expectations are.

Talking to your teens can be difficult, and we are here to help. Verano, en el condado de Routt es un sueño hecho realidad para los fanáticos que les encanta andar afuera. Nuestra comunidad ofrece una gran cantidad de actividades para andar afuera, incluyen: senderismo, andar en bicicleta, natación, pescar, campamento, y actividades acuáticos, etc. También es un tiempo cuando los jóvenes están fuera de la escuela y de deportes relacionados con la escuela, como clubs y actividades extracurriculares. Durante el verano la juventud aparece tener más tiempo libre y es una temporada donde los jóvenes se involucran en conductas riesgosas como beber alcohol siendo menor de edad.

Frecuentemente los padres tal vez se encuentren en una posición difícil en si dejar a su hijo ir a una fiesta, donde hay una probabilidad que haiga alcohol disponible. Algunos padres eligen tener la fiesta en su propia casa en vez de tener el riesgo de tener a sus hijos bebiendo sin superversiuon. Frecuentemente estos padres tienen buenas intenciones y creen que dándoles un lugar seguro y una fiesta supervisada les va ensenar como beber alcohol responsablemente, mantenerlos de beber en otros lugares e impedir de beber mientras manejan. Hay muchas razones importantes por lo cual esta situación no es la mejor manera de manejar.

Padres que provienen un lugar para que sus hijos beban alcohol están dándoles a los jóvenes menores de edad un mensaje de que este comportamiento está bien. Esto es ilegal. La ordenanza social de anfitrión de Steamboat Springs (SHO) pasó esto en el 2009, que ejerce a los adultos a ser responsables por permitir a las partes de menor de edad el consumo de alcohol en su casa. La ordenanza (SHO) le permite a la policía a ejercer a los dueños de la casa o a los hospedadores (incluyendo a los padres) responsables por los menores bebiendo en la propiedad o en su fiesta. La fianza de Anfitrión Social en Steamboat empieza de 500 y pueden ser tanto como 1,000. Penalización puede también incluir tiempo en prisión.
