Thoughtful Parenting: Helping hands

You don’t have to live in Steamboat Springs to understand we are a community that embodies the “It takes a village to raise a child” mantra. A good portion of families living in town have relocated to the Yampa Valley from all corners of the globe. While exciting, this can often leave parents feeling a bit stranded when an extra set of hands and hearts is needed.

For more than 50 percent of families living in Steamboat Springs, that extra set of hands is found just beyond the blue doors of the Boys & Girls Club, located on Eighth Street between Pine and Aspen streets.

Children age 6 to 14 participate in programs that focus on character and leadership building, healthy lifestyles and academic success. While the programming is designed to be educational, we strive to ensure it is also fun. Children are free to choose their activities, so whether they are artistic, athletic or technologically inclined, there is always space at the club for children to be themselves.

With their children safe and engaged in positive activities, busy parents can attend to personal matters, knowing their children are safe and happy.

Club programming is available to all youth age 6 to 18 living in the community. Boys & Girls Club counselors and school district buses bring the children from their schools to the club immediately after school ends. Kids are welcomed into the club, where they find a healthy snack provided by LiftUp of Routt County and people who care for them and many of their friends.

Club programming is $25 per year. After-school programming is free and runs from 3:15 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The club is also open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday on school days off and during the summer for $1 per hour.

As a working parent of four, I know I would not be as productive as I need to be without an extra set of hands. We live in a world that celebrates independence, but the truth is, we need each other, we need our community and we need organizations that foster positive and encouraging environments for our children.

Youth development organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs close the gap when we need a safe space for our children to be when we are required to be somewhere else. I am so happy to be a part of the Boys & Girls Club family.
