Thoughtful Parenting: Career development and resources for youth

Did you know Routt County has a workforce center that offers free resources for teens and young adults?

The Colorado Workforce Center has a dedicated staff member who works with the youth and young adult population on a variety of tools to help with jobs, internships and career preparation as youth enter the workforce. From resume preparation, interview skills, interest inventories and career tools assessments, youth can start exploring a variety of career opportunities.

The Colorado Workforce Center partnered with the Routt County Youth Services Coalition to host the third annual Youth Career and Job Fair last Wednesday at the Steamboat Springs High School. There were over 15 businesses and agencies recruiting employment and offering career resources.

High school students had an opportunity to talk first hand with employers about summer jobs, internships, mentorship programs and after school/weekend employment. It was a great way to network and meet potential employers in a casual atmosphere.

As a follow-up to the Youth Career and Job Fair, the Routt County Youth Services Coalition strives to be a continued resource to youth in Routt County. There are over 25 businesses and organizations dedicated to filling the gaps in youth services through agency collaboration.

The mission of Routt County Youth Services Coalition is a network of youth advocates and service providers committed to enhancing the quality of life for youth and young adults in our communities. Ultimately, the goal of the coalition is to provide a comprehensive, single-point of contact for youth and families in Routt County.

Parents and youth, we would love to hear from you. Our goal is to connect you with the many happenings and resources available in Routt County. We aim to be a one-stop-shop or a quick phone call away for anyone that has questions about youth services and involvement.

As summer approaches, we hope to have an updated calendar of events with happenings, workshops, employment opportunities and resources.

We encourage our youth who are at the age of entering the workforce to find work/career passion and take advantage of the many resources available in Routt County. From working outdoors with the Community Youth Corps or Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, or a summer camp counselor with the Boys and Girls Club, to working in the Food and Beverage Department at the Steamboat Ski Area, the opportunities are endless.

Find something you enjoy doing and embrace the workforce with a positive attitude. I will end with one of my favorite quotes, “Do what you love, love what you do.” After all, work should also be fun.

Kyleigh Lawler is the executive coordinator for the Routt County Youth Services.
