The Steamboat Pilot & Today names new editor

Trevor Ballantyne has been selected to lead the Steamboat Pilot & Today as editor, succeeding Eli Pace, who accepted a position as the editor of The Maui News in November.

“Trevor’s hard work and dedication to journalism led to this promotion, and I am excited to see him bring the same level of dedication to the editor’s role,” said Bonnie Stewart, publisher of the Steamboat Pilot & Today and the Craig Press.

Ballantyne has been serving as the government and housing reporter for the newspaper since August 2023. Hailing from the Boston area, he brought a wealth of journalism experience after working for Hearst Connecticut Media Group and for Gannett New England, where he won awards for his coverage of the pandemic’s impact on Boston-area nursing homes.

His bylines have appeared in publications such as USA TODAY, the Cape Cod Times, the New Hampshire Union Leader and The Connecticut Post. His articles have also been published in The Boston Business Journal, The Associated Press and The Worcester Telegram, as well as The Norwich Bulletin, The MetroWestDaily News and The Lowell Sun.

Ballantyne graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Elon University in North Carolina in 2011. During his time at Elon, he spent a semester studying abroad at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. In 2019, Ballantyne obtained a master’s degree in journalism from Boston University.

During his tenure as a reporter for the Steamboat Pilot & Today, Ballantyne has written extensively on housing issues, covering the events leading up to and following the Brown Ranch voter referendum in March and the Discovery Land Company’s proposed development in Stagecoach.

Outside of his regular beat, Ballantyne has also stayed on top of breaking news and important courts and crime coverage while filing a variety of general assignment stories.

“I am honored and excited to step into this leadership role and help continue the legacy that this newspaper represents,” said Ballantyne following the announcement. “I will do my best to foster reporting that serves and adds value to our community and I hope that our newsroom continues to be seen as a partner in bringing to light the issues and stories that matter most to our readers.”

John Chalstrom, the assistant editor of the Steamboat Pilot & Today, has been promoted to the position of editor of the Craig Press as well as special publications editor for both newspapers, overseeing the development of special sections that include Colorado Hunter, Yampa Valley Adventures, Moffat County Locals and many others.
