The hills were alive in Steamboat

Our hills were alive this past weekend with “The Sound of Music.” Deep gratitude goes out to Marje Tracy, Lindsey Garey and Ebany Rae for their vision, passion, commitment and courage in bringing this project to life.

Although Ruby French’s star shone bright as she brought Maria’s story to life, she was surrounded by a cast and crew who each added their own unique talents in word, song and dance.

We had to remind several show attendees that this was not a professional troupe on tour — instead the cast and stage crew was entirely composed of Steamboat’s own youth from grade schoolers on up to recent high school graduates.

We are reminded that the performers did not develop their talents and skills in a vacuum. Everyone involved has been taught or encouraged by a local teacher or artist. Parents and volunteers got students to rehearsals, fed and encouraged them, and built, moved and struck sets. Undiscovered Earth, County Commissioners and other local businesses offered rehearsal spaces. Strings collaborated with and offered their amazing facilities for the shows.

Finally, we must note that “Sound of Music” offered a particularly poignant reminder that all of us must stand against anti-Semitism in our country. Georg and his von Trapp family definitely portrayed how each of us CAN make a difference in our own little way.

“The Sound of Music” was an extraordinary experience. Thanks again to all who made “Sound of Music” possible right here in our own mountain valley.
