Temperature inversion to persist in Steamboat Springs this week

“Quiet and cool” weather is expected to last through this week, “with little hope for precipitation until or just after the weekend,” said local meteorologist Mike Weissbluth on Sunday.

Weissbluth, who posts twice weekly local forecasts for the Yampa Valley to SnowAlarm.com, said a combination of light winds, fresh snow and clear skies following the Thanksgiving holiday week have combined to create a “strong temperature inversion where higher elevations are warmer than the cold Yampa Valley bottom.”

“For example, the low temperature at the Storm Peak Lab near the top of the Steamboat Ski Resort was 15 F this morning compared to 1 F at my weather station near the resort’s base. And the low temperature this morning was warmer than the frigid -7 F Saturday morning and -10 F on Friday morning,” said Weissbluth.

Looking ahead, the local meteorologist said low temperatures are expected to be in the single digits with highs in the mid-30 F range until at least the weekend.

A cold front could break the inversion cycle with a storm near the end of the weekend or at the beginning of next week but Weissbluth said Sunday it is too early to tell if that would happen.

“So enjoy the sunny but cool week, and I’ll have more details about the incoming storm in my next regularly scheduled weather narrative on Thursday afternoon,” Weissbluth added.
