Teen’s autopsy still pending

A complete autopsy report about the death of 17-year-old Adele Dombrowski is expected today, according to the Routt County Coroner’s Office.

The autopsy, performed in Jefferson County, did not show an obvious cause of death, and toxicology results still are not complete, Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said. On Monday, the Steamboat Pilot & Today filed a Colorado Open Records Act request seeking a complete copy of the autopsy report.

Ryg said a simple blood test showed that there was very little alcohol in Dombrowski’s blood and no drugs. However, he would not release what her blood alcohol content was, saying he wanted to release that information when the cause of death has been determined.

Ryg, who also is the minister at Euzoa Bible Church, helped lead a memorial service Friday for Dombrowski. At the service, Ryg announced that Dombrowski did not die of alcohol poisoning. He said that could be determined from the blood test alone.

He added that the blood test does not mean that alcohol was in no way related to her death. Ryg said he expects further toxicology tests to show a cause of death.

Dombrowski, a senior at Steamboat Springs High School, was found dead the morning of Sept. 24 in her room. She spent part of the previous night in Craig watching a high school football game.

Several witnesses interviewed by police said Dombrowski drank alcohol with friends Friday night. On Sept. 25, a 20-year-old Steamboat Springs man came to police and confessed to purchasing a 1.75-liter bottle of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum from The Bottleneck for Dombrowski. The man, Kevin Miller Neuwirth, was arrested on suspicion of providing alcohol to a minor. The clerk who sold Neuwirth the alcohol and the store’s owner were cited for the sale.

Dombrowski reportedly had a history of seizures, and Ryg said she had experienced a seizure a week before she died.
