Teams celebrate in Breck

— Steamboat Springs Little League coach Stace Toy held up his cell phone.

“Guys, who won the game?” he yelled.

Shrieks erupted from the mouths of nearly a dozen 9- and 10-year-olds on the other end.

“Sorry, we’re a little excited,” Toye said. “I think they want to kick us out of the pizza place.”

Steamboat defeated unbeaten Eagle-Vail, 10-6, on Wednesday night to force a deciding championship game at 5:30 p.m. today in Breckenridge.

The District 3 tournament is double elimination, so Steamboat, which lost to Eagle-Vail earlier in the tournament, had to win Wednesday’s game to force a deciding game between the squads.

“We are the team to beat,” Toye said.

It didn’t appear that way early Wednesday. Trailing 4-0 after the first inning, Steamboat had to rally to win. Steamboat’s Koby Bishop struck out eight to get the complete-game victory.

Matthew Regan and Charles Toye had extra-base hits for Steamboat. Daniel Lapointe laid down a key sacrifice bunt late in the game, as well.

The team, which was celebrating in downtown Breckenridge, has been camping near Lake Dillon since Friday to avoid commuting.

“We’ve been here in the rain,” Toye said. “This was the only game we didn’t play in the driving rain.”

Today’s winner advances to the state championship in Grand Junction.

Steamboat defeated Summit County, 6-1, on Monday to advance to Wednesday’s game.

Regan went the distance for Steamboat, and teammates Kayden Peterson and Cutter Pasternak had extra-base hits.
