Take a look inside new brewpub under construction on Yampa Street

— A 6,000-pound, wood-fired pizza oven has taken over what used to be a parking space for a utility truck in a garage bay on Yampa Street.

And soon, pieces of the large, wooden spools that used to store cable at Yampa Valley Electric Association will be used to craft Mountain Tap Brewery's new bar.

This building's time as a bustling industrial center is finished.

Now, it's time for it to host food, beer and fun.

"It's been interesting and exciting and a bit of a roller coaster at times," brewery owner Rich Tucciarone, said as he described the efforts he and his wife, Wendy, have made to convert this piece of YVEA's old headquarters into a brewpub with polished floors and views of Howelsen Hill. "Bar. New floors. Pizza oven. This place looks a million times different than it did a few weeks ago."

The sight of that hand-crafted pizza oven being forklifted into the garage bays Monday was perhaps the most visible sign to date that a large stretch of the downtown roadway is being transformed from a dead zone reserved for industry into a livelier spot.

Soon, large tanks for beer brewing will move in too.

Later this summer, tubers and bikers will be able to sit on a new patio across the street from the river and enjoy pizza and craft brews.

And in the winter, patrons will be able to see Howelsen Hill lit up right outside the large glass garage bay doors.

"We're just looking forward to making it a nice, family-friendly, community-centric, post mountain bike or ski or Winter Sports Club event," Tucciarone said. "Food and beer and hang out."

Crews were busy Monday working on different sections of the interior of the brewpub.

The delivery of the oven, which was handcrafted in California and can cook as many as 10 pizzas at a time, was a highlight.

Opening a brewery in Steamboat has been a longtime dream for Tucciarone, who has previously served as head brewer at Breckenridge Brewery in Denver and brewmaster and vice president of brewery operations at Kona Brewing Company in Hawaii.

The Tucciarones are aiming to open the brewery in late June.
