Swayed by remarks of Gold Star Mothers, Horn says she’ll vote for Trump, ‘Make America Safe Again’
Steamboat Springs — Routt County Treasurer Brita Horn, representing Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District as one of the state’s delegates to the Republican National Convention, announced, at mid-afternoon July 19, her intention to cast her vote for Donald Trump.
“From the floor of the RNC Convention, I fought all the fights that I was elected to by CD3 and everything you elected me to do,” Horn wrote in an email. “I’ve decided that because (Senator Ted) Cruz suspended his campaign and has given no indication of reactivating it, I’m going to cast my vote for Donald Trump.”
Steamboat Today reported April 12 that Horn, who originally supported the candidacy of Carly Fiorina during the Republican primaries until she ended her campaign, was invited by U.S. Rep. Ken Buck from Colorado’s 4th Congressional District to become part of the list of delegates endorsed by then Republican candidate Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.
And Horn sent out signals on the opening day of the Republican Convention July 18 that she wanted alternative voices to the Trump nomination to be heard.
The convention opened on a note of discord as another Colorado delegate, Kendal Unruh, petitioned the convention’s rules committee to set delegates free from the obligation to support candidates they’d been committed to by state primaries or caucuses.
The Associated Press reported that as expected, the convention’s rules committee used a voice vote to reject a proposal by Unruh to call the roll and let delegates vote on the convention rules.
Soon after, Horn expressed her frustration in a pair of Twitter messages.
“If the (party) wants us to trust the process & wants unity then allow transparency & follow the stinkin’ rules,” Horn tweeted Monday.
Soon after, she wrote: “I’m embarrassed that we cannot have transparency in our party. What R they afraid of?”
However, Horn said Tuesday that upon hearing the remarks at the convention made by two Gold Star mothers who lost sons in the military, she re-focused on the theme of the convention’s opening night.
“I am a Christian first, a mom second and a Republican third,” Horn wrote. “I decided to vote for Trump because I stand arm in arm with Pat Smith and Karen Vaughn, Gold Star moms whose sons were brutally murdered and who both endorsed Trump on stage. Hillary Clinton will continue Obama’s reckless foreign policy and no mother should ever have a Commander in Chief with such little regard for their sons’ lives. I hope you will join me in voting for Donald Trump and Make America Safe Again.”
