Routt County Sheriff’s deputies say they shot at a vehicle in an attempt to disable it after an encounter Wednesday evening with a suspect who had still not been apprehended as of Thursday afternoon.

The incident resulted in a shelter in place request issued at approximately 9:30 p.m. for the area near the intersection of Routt County Road 14 and 14B.

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident began after deputies conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle driven by 46-year-old Brian McCleary. The stop was made near McCleary’s home, located at 30575 County Rd. 14B.

According to the sheriff’s office, a police dog indicated a positive alert after McCleary was pulled over. Police said McCleary then allegedly rammed two police vehicles before, “a deputy attempted to disable the vehicle by shooting at a tire” and “McCleary proceeded to flee the scene on foot.”

Reached for comment and asked about the reason for the traffic stop, Sheriff Doug Scherar said: “That’s a good question. I don’t think I ever heard what the actual traffic stop was for, so I can’t answer that.”

“A lot of the situation is still under investigation,” added Scherar. “I’m not going to comment on any of the time frame yet.”

As of Thursday afternoon, the officer who initially pulled McCleary over is not on duty and went on “his days off,” according to Scherar.

Multiple officers who responded to the scene Wednesday night declined to comment on the situation, which remained active until 2:30 a.m. when the shelter-in-place order was lifted without an arrest being made.

As of Thursday afternoon, Scherar said there are no leads related to McCleary’s location.

The sheriff’s office asked Thursday that members of the public contact law enforcement if they know of McCleary’s whereabouts.

The sheriff’s office said no deputies were injured during the incident, which prompted a large response from local law enforcement agencies including the Steamboat Springs Police Department, the Hayden Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol.

The 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was also activated to assist in the investigation and several off-duty officers drove their personal vehicles to the scene in response to the incident.

The sheriff’s office said a perimeter was established around the area and an extensive search for McCleary ensued. The search included officers using drones equipped with thermal imaging technology to survey the area.

According to a police news release, Brian McCleary is described as 5’10” and 220 pounds and is a white male with blue eyes and short brown hair.

“The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the affected areas for their cooperation with sheltering in place and the communities assistance with this ongoing investigation,” said the news release.
