Susan Ritschard: Sportsmanship

In a day and age when so much publicity is given to bad sportsmanship, I wanted to point out some good sportsmanship.

The Little League District 3 10- to 11-year-old All-Stars tournament was held in Kremmling. All participants deserve huge kudos — players, parents, coaches and tournament staff.

My son was on the Grand County team, and both teams played a great tournament. The tournament did not end the way our team was hoping. My son had a tough play to end the last game, thus the tournament was over, Steamboat being victorious. My son was visibly upset over his error.

When all the celebrating and huddle talk was over, the Steamboat catcher came over to the dug-out and asked to speak to our catcher. He told my son, basically, “You played a great tournament, don’t get down on yourself.”

This made all the difference in the world to my son. Thank you catcher, (Christian), thank you to his parents and thank you to his coach. Keep up the good work in raising respectable young men. That’s what Little League is all about.

We wish the Steamboat 10-11 all-star team the best of luck at the state tournament.
