Sunday Steamboat Pilot & Today moves to tabloid format Jan. 6

Brent Boyer

— The Sunday Steamboat Pilot & Today will move to a tabloid format beginning Jan. 6. Sunday's edition is the final Pilot & Today in the traditional broadsheet format.

While the paper's size (a broadsheet page is 13 inches wide and 21.5 inches tall, and a tabloid page is 10.75 inches wide and 14 inches tall) will be the most immediately recognizable change, readers also will notice a focus on in-depth and investigative reporting in each Sunday edition of the newspaper. The Jan. 6 issue will feature extensive coverage of Steamboat Ski Area's 50th anniversary.

The new Sunday Pilot & Today will feature three sections: news, sports, and business and real estate. Existing content exclusive to the Sunday newspaper, including the weekly Jail Report, real estate transactions, obituaries, public notices, Sunday ViewPoints and the American Profile magazine, will remain in place with the switch to the tabloid format.

In a column published Dec. 17, Pilot & Today General Manager Scott Stanford told readers the business reason behind making the change is efficiency.

"We have less waste and can use the same newsprint we're already using six days per week," Stanford wrote. "Beyond these business considerations is that we know from surveys and interviews that our readers and advertisers prefer the tabloid page to the broadsheet."

The price of the Sunday Pilot & Today will remain the same — $32 a year to have 52 issues delivered to your home or $1.50 per issue at the rack. For a limited time, the Pilot & Today is offering a free three-month trial for new subscribers to have the Sunday newspaper delivered to their homes each weekend.
