Striding and gliding into spring

— For the last 15 years, the Steamboat Ski Touring Center has provided the perfect setting for a clash between winter and spring during its annual Stride and Glide race.

“Sometimes we have mid-winter conditions and other years you could have come out in beach wear,” said Birgetta Lindgren, owner and operator of the touring center.

The 15th annual Stride and Glide will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday. The event takes the traditional winter sport of cross country skiing and combines it with running — one that is better suited for spring and summer.

For the first time this year, athletes will also be given the option of jumping onto a bike in the Stride and Ride.

Lindgren said athletes in the event would ski either a 5-kilometer or 10-kilometer cross country ski race in the first part of the event.

The skier can choose either the classic or skate-skiing technique.

In the second portion of the event, the athletes will complement their skiing effort either by running or riding the same distance.

“It’s just a fun way to wind up the winter season,” Lindgren said.

Last year, about 30 athletes showed up to take part in the competition, but the event has drawn as many as 60 skiers in the past.

The prize for winning is simply the satisfaction of saying you were the fastest to cross the finish line. However, all the entrants will have the same chance of winning great prizes in a post-event drawing.

Competitors can either complete both halves of the event on their own or form teams of two where one member completes one leg.

The cost is $20 for an individual or team.
