STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Anxiety was high Tuesday when a spring snow storm created white-out conditions on Rabbit Ears Pass.

“Even trucks with chains are getting stuck,” Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said mid-day.

At times, there was limited or no visibility, and the road was almost closed.

Commercial drivers were required to use chains and passenger vehicles needed tires with adequate traction.

One driver in a Hummer was so terrified during the storm that she did not want to continue driving.

The storm made its arrival in Northwest Colorado on Monday night with strong winds between 40 and 50 mph at the Storm Peak Laboratory, which sits at 10,530 feet at Steamboat Ski Area.

The lab measured a gust of 62.1 mph at about 8 a.m.

The wind died down when snow moved into the area and then the wind picked up again.

In South Routt County, a tree fell on a propane tank, which caused it to leak.

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction was calling for the sun to return Wednesday with a high of 43 degrees.

Rain is expected to roll into the area Thursday night, and there is a 50 percent chance of rain for Friday. Thunder is possible on Saturday.
