Steve Marshall: Johnson is missed

A remarkable person has left us. You may have thought you knew him but, in truth, you probably didn’t.

He didn’t say much, but when he did, it usually cut right to the point and was heavily laced with humor and accompanied by a hearty laugh.

He was an ideal companion to have along on the trail; he never complained and was wildly enthusiastic about the beauty of the high country of Colorado, no matter what the time of year.

He lived for his son, whom he treasured and loved above all other people or things in his life. Most things he did in his work and play centered on his son’s interests or to further them and, what’s more, they enjoyed them together. He was, above all, very proud of his son and basked in his achievements and in his life.

He was a good friend to all those who knew him, but if you didn’t know him you would have never known he was there.

Above all, he taught me a lot about humility, a quality not often treasured in this day and age. He went about his life very quietly but with purpose, joined by a solemn intent to never hurt anyone, or anything, either by design or default.

He contributed to this community in so many ways with his work, his spirit and by being involved in his life; we are all better human beings for having known him.

I am privileged to have known Larry Johnson and feel lucky to have had him consider me his friend.
