Steamboat’s conference hopes dwindle

— The Rifle High School girls soccer team took another step towards securing the Western Slope Conference title Tuesday night with a 1-0 win over Glenwood Springs.

The Bears’ Maria Savage netted the game’s only goal at 19:63 in the first half. Neither the Bears nor Demons would score in the final minute of the first half or in the second half of play as the game ended 1-0 in favor of the Bears.

Rifle is now 3-0-2 in conference play with one game remaining, against last-place Moffat County on Saturday.

Steamboat hangs onto a slight lead in the Western Slope Conference at 4-1-1 in the standings. However, if Rifle wins on Saturday the Bears will move into first place in the standings. Steamboat, which does not have another conference game, will fall to second. Both teams will qualify for the regional playoffs.
