Steamboat’s American Legion baseball team records strong weekend

Great pitching and a few offensive explosions powered the Steamboat Springs American Legion baseball team to a 3-1 record Saturday and Sunday as the team went 3-1 in a pair of doubleheaders against competition from across the region.

“It was a good weekend,” coach Dave Roy said, summing things up.

Steamboat swept a pair of Saturday games against Eagle Valley, 3-0 and 6-4, then split against Summit County, winning 12-3 before falling 15-7.

Ryan Jeep powered the team from the mound for its first win, dealing a shutout while striking out 10. The team got the only run it needed in that game when Jesse Pugh scored on a Thomas Kelly hit.

Billy Clark pitched in the next win and got plenty of offense as Jeep, Johnny Stensvad and David Cropper all had two hits and Kelly had two RBI.

Stensvad went the distance pitching in the first game against Summit. His team racked up 16 hits, Kelly Charlie Fitzhugh and Matt Hansen each picking up three. Stensvad then had four hits in the next game, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the only loss of the weekend.

“We made some running mistakes, some bonehead plays that we’ll work on this week,” Roy said. “We also want to tighten up our defense, but as a team we are hitting .370, and we’re looking forward to a strong finish in the next three weeks.”

Steamboat, 12-5, was set to play Tuesday night, but the game was canceled and now is scheduled to return to action Sunday against Eagle Valley in Gypsum.
