Steamboat volleys to 6th-place finish

The Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team’s match against Moffat County on Tuesday night came on the heels of a long weekend in Fort Morgan.

The Sailors (5-2) picked up wins over Merino, Brush and Wray en route to a sixth-place finish in the first tournament of the season.

Steamboat also lost tough matches to Valley High School and Akron during the 16-team tournament. Steamboat coach Wendy Hall hopes the losses will push her team to improve.

Steamboat lost the first game 25-19 to Merino in the opening match of the tournament. However, the Sailors rebounded with 25-21, 20-17 wins in the abbreviated three-game format.

Steamboat lost 25-19 and 25-17 to a solid Valley High School team in the second match of the weekend. Steamboat came back to beat Brush 25-12, 25-19 to wrap up pool play.

Steamboat was second in the pool and played Wray in the first elimination round, winning 25-10 and 25-13. In the consolation finals, which determine fifth place, Steamboat fell to Akron 27-25 and 25-21.
