Documentary about Sheriff Arpaio launches Maricopa play

Bud Werner Memorial Library and the Chief Theater present a free community screening of “The Joe Show” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 at the Chief.
The documentary about Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the world’s most famous and entertaining law enforcement officer — a man who knows that in today’s politically competitive world of instant fame, politicians need their time in the spotlight — screens in honor of the upcoming performance of local playwright Jorge Avila’s new play, “Maricopa: An American Border Tale,” on Aug. 18 at the Chief.
Eight years in the making, “The Joe Show” is a wildly entertaining yet important case study of the increasingly dysfunctional relationship between modern media, politics and law enforcement in America. It’s a tragi-comedy of historic significance featuring Larry King, Steven Seagal, Hugh Downs, Ted Nugent, Dan Ariely, Noam Chomsky, Lisa Allen and Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
