Steamboat tennis wins again, remains undefeated

— The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team remained perfect Thursday evening by downing Fruita Monument, 6-1, in Grand Junction.

“I think it was Lisa Floyd’s best match this season,” coach John Aragon said. “It was nice to see her bounce back after losing her match against the girl from Aspen last Tuesday.”

Steamboat won the Aspen match, 6-1, but Floyd was the only player to lose a match. It was her first loss of the season.

However, Floyd made quick work of Fruita Monument’s Lindsey Hale, beating her 6-1, 6-0.

Breanne Murray topped Molly Leadbetter (6-1, 6-4) and Shelby Reed topped Kate Adams (6-2, 6-0) to give Steamboat a decisive edge in the match.

Steamboat closed out the match by picking up points at No. 1 doubles (Molly Weiss and Kristin Toy), No. 2 doubles (Kirsten Brehmer and Kylee Swiggart) and No. 4 doubles (Alexis and Valerie Lezin).

The Steamboat players hope to maintain their winning ways today when the Western Slope Tournament begins in Grand Junction. Matches will be played at Mesa State College and Lincoln Park. Sixteen top teams, including top ranked Cherry Creek High School, will compete in the tournament.

“This tournament will have a lot of good players and the matches will take place outside,” Aragon said. “You can tell that our players haven’t been playing a lot of matches outside, so this weekend should be a good test.”
