Steamboat tennis sweeps up win on the road

— It was a good day from top to bottom for the Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team, which beat Evergreen on Friday in a dual, 7-0. The Sailors swept the action.

“We had a great performance as a team,” coach John Aragon said. “Everyone stepped up. It was really good to see everyone perform like that.”

No. 1 singles player Rachel Grubbs got things started with a powerful 6-3, 6-0 win. Aragon said that dominance trickled down the lineup.

“She had a very worthy opponent, a solid player, and Rachel just outplayed her,” Aragon said. “That set the tone. It went to No. 2 singles Ellie Bender all the way down to No. 4 doubles. It was just a very solid performance.”

Bender won, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, and Kira Lorenzen won a long match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.

Katie Spencer and Shealie Jenkins won at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Brooke Metzler and Maddie Labor won at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-0. Hanna Haggarty and Malia Fraioli won at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, 6-1, and no one won easier than Sabina Berend and Sydney Boyd, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 doubles.

Steamboat now has a busy day Saturday to wrap up its weekend road trip, playing first against Ralston Valley, then against Boulder.

“I’m not sure what Boulder has, but Ralston Valley, they probably have their best team in the last 17 years,” Aragon said. “That will be a real test.”
