Steamboat tennis shows well in weekend tournament

— The Steamboat Springs High School tennis team capped a strong weekend on Saturday at a Littleton tournament, and now the squad is preparing for its final homestand of the season.

The Sailors picked up a second-place finish from Ben Wharton at No. 3 singles, another third-place finish from the No. 3 doubles team of Matt White and Joe Borgerding and a fourth-place finish from Troy DeJong at No. 2 singles.

“Our team is rounding into shape,” coach Don Toy said. “I’m happy with how the kids look. We’re playing with a lot more enthusiasm and heart, and that’s what I want.”

The Sailors begin a short home stretch at 2 p.m. Tuesday with a rescheduled match against Vail Mountain. The squad then plays at home Saturday against Kent Denver and Evergreen.
