Steamboat tennis opens with win

— The Steamboat Springs High School tennis team opened its season Friday with a big win, going on the road to take down Fruita Monument 5-2.

The Sailors got a win at the top of their roster, then swept the doubles matches to start the season 1-0.

“We lost two matches, but we played very well and were really pleased by the effort everyone put forth,” coach John Aragon said. “It’s a good start to what’s hopefully another good season.”

Tatum Burger, a freshman playing at No. 1 singles, won the first match of her high school career, 6-0, 6-2.

Maddie Thompson and Shea Burger lost at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Both were tight matches, Thompson going down, 6-2, 6-4, and Burger 6-3, 7-6(3).

Hanna Haggerty and Maddie Labor won at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-1. Sabina Berend and Lily Petersen won at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-3. Norma Techarukpong and Shannon Ross won at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and Mariah Hoots and Natalie Simon won at No. 4 doubles, 6-4, 7-5.

The team is back in action Saturday playing in Grand Junction against Aspen.
Aragon said the team is still lacking a few of its players who will likely end up on varsity, but that it’s poised to play well.

“Our younger players we have coming up really stepped it up and played well,” he said.
