Steamboat sweeps Aspen

In the long run, Saturday’s tennis matches against Aspen may be more beneficial to Steamboat Springs.

The Sailors were scheduled to face Alexander Dawson on Sept. 26, but the matches were canceled and not rescheduled. In place of Alexander Dawson, Steamboat Springs scheduled matches against Aspen, the Sailors’ primary competition in the region.

The teams met in Vail on Saturday, and Steamboat did not lose a singles or doubles match, setting up what could be a great regional showing for the Sailors this weekend in Montrose.

The top two singles players and doubles teams in each bracket will advance to the state tournament.

“They are actually a lot better than I thought they were,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “It was good for our guys to see them. It made them work.”

Although Steamboat swept Aspen to finish the regular season 8-2 in dual matches, several matches were closer than the final results indicated.

“The point play was you set up the points and win them instead of them just making errors,” Aragon said. “That was really good for us.”

Aragon expected the regional seedings to be announced today. The Sailors are hoping to send their entire team to the state tournament in Pueblo. Steamboat is the best team in the region, but the team knows nothing is guaranteed.

“There is no state tournament without going through that regional tournament,” Aragon said.
