Steamboat Storm start with wins

— Steamboat Springs’ semi-pro baseball team started its life with a pair of wins Tuesday, and it hopes to add two more when the team plays its first home doubleheader at noon Thursday at Emerald Park.

The Steamboat Storm beat the Rocky Mountain Oysters, a Grand Junction squad, in a pair of games Tuesday, first 4-2, then 10-8 in a game in which the Storm bounced back from an 8-0 deficit.

It’s early, coach Matt Ellinghuysen said, and he and his players are still learning about each other, so those wins were sweet.

“We’ve only gotten to practice with the guys twice,” he said. “We didn’t know what we had and we’re still in stages of figuring out who to play where and when.”

The team is composed mostly of junior college and NCAA Division 2 collegiate baseball players. Three Steamboat Springs High School players are on the team as well.

The Storm plays in a six-team league, against teams from other mountain areas, including Glenwood Springs, Vail, Eagle Valley and Summit.

It will play 30 games this summer and cap its season with a tournament.

The squad will try to stay undefeated at noon Thursday when it plays in Steamboat against the Glenwood Geckos.

The doubleheader is free for fans.
