Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club qualifies 19 skiers for U16 Championships

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — On the final day of qualifying for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Rocky/Central U16 Championships, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s Luke Olson and Maren Elvidge had strong showings at the SYNC Cup slalom races at Howelsen Hill. Elvidge finished in the top 30, and Olson in the top 20, which was good enough for both athletes to advance to the regional championships.

In addition to Olson’s and Elvidge’s top performances, Steamboat’s Jordan Simon, Nick Orfanakis and Colin Kagan finished in the top 10 on the boys side, adding their names to the championship roster as well.

For the girls, Katya Thurston moved from 34th to 11th place, and Jaelie Hovey recovered from a major mistake in her first run to capture ninth place after her second run.

In all, the Winter Sports Club has qualified 19 Alpine skiers for the championships, and they include:
