Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club hosts national qualifier this weekend

— The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club will host many of the best skiers and snowboarders in the region this weekend during a United States of America Snowboarding Association event at Steamboat Ski Area.

The slopestyle event is a national qualifier and will take place at 10 a.m. in the Bashor Bowl terrain park.

Events will take place today and Sunday. Today’s competition will feature skiers, and Sunday will feature snowboarders.

Jon Casson, snowboarding program director at the Winter Sports Club, said it’s been a while since Steamboat Springs has hosted a USASA-level event, and it will present a rare opportunity for local athletes to compete at home.

“This should be a lot of fun,” Casson said. “These events are national qualifiers, so I’m sure there will be a lot of talented athletes coming to Steamboat Springs looking to qualify.”

Casson said today’s event will feature about 70 skiers, and Sunday’s should have a field of about 80 snowboarders.
