Steamboat Springs volleyball team struggles in win
Steamboat Springs — Listening to Steamboat Springs High School volleyball coach Wendy Hall describe Tuesday’s match in Middle Park was a lesson in expectations and results.
“We were flat tonight and didn’t have a real sharp focus,” Hall said. “We struggled a little in all categories. We had trouble getting momentum going.”
On a night when that happened, Steamboat still was able to walk away with a 3-0 win, taking sets 25-11, 25-22 and 25-17.
After running away with the first set, the Sailors had to come from behind in the second set.
Although the scores tell a story of Steamboat domination, Hall said that wasn’t the case.
“I told them in the locker room, maybe we’re a good team because we didn’t play well at all and managed to win the game,” Hall said.
Steamboat next prepares for its biggest game of the season. The team plays at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Glenwood Springs.
The Sailors and Demons each have four Western Slope League losses, with Glenwood having a game in hand in the standings.
The Demons beat the Sailors, 3-0, earlier in the season, but Steamboat has won four straight matches, dropping just one set.
“I know we’ve improved tremendously over the last month,” Hall said. “The last couple of weeks, we’re on the upswing right now.”
Hall said the key would be neutralizing the Demons attack, led by senior setter Delaney Gaddis. Hall called Gaddis the “premier setter in our league” and said trying to slow her down will be key.
The biggest thing, though, “is playing our best game and see how they handle that,” Hall said. “We didn’t do that the first time around.”
