Steamboat Springs Nordic skiers have top finishes at Snow Mountain Ranch

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Steamboat Springs High School Nordic ski team traveled to Snow Mountain Ranch for races hosted by Middle Park High School.

The skiers kicked off the day with a 3K classic race in the morning followed by a pursuit start 5K skate race in the afternoon. Starting positions in the skate race were determined by the classic race.

Steamboat Springs’ Zoe Bennett-Manke collected another top-5 finish, taking fifth overall in the skate race. Winter Boese also added a top-10 finish. Overall, six girls from Steamboat Springs qualified for the state championships in classic and five qualified for skate.

Bennett-Manke and Boese are currently ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the state for skate skiing.

Steamboat Springs’ Wyatt Mortenson led the boys team in both races. Unfortunately, Mortenson crashed in the classic race, falling to 16th place. He’d bounce back with a sixth-place overall finish in the afternoon’s skate race, which seals his place as the sixth-ranked skate skier in the state.

Overall, Steamboat’s teams finished in the top six in both disciplines. The girls team took fourth place in the classic race and fifth place in the skate race, while the boys took sixth in both the classic and skate races.

The Sailors travel to Aspen on Saturday, Feb. 2.
