Steamboat Springs — A 7,700-square-foot home, located steps from the base of the Thunderhead lift at Steamboat Ski Area, sold earlier this month for $4.9 million, the largest home sale in the mountain area of the city since 2008.
It’s also the only home sale of more than $4 million in Steamboat Springs since at least 2014, with the other top sales boosted in price due to significant acreage, according to information from Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty.
The six-bedroom, seven-bath home was listed last fall for $5.7 million by SSIR brokers Darlinda Baldinger and ChLoe Lawrence.
“A wonderful family is buying it, and it was a great deal — everyone involved work well together,” Baldinger said.
According to the Routt County Clerk & Recorder’s Office, the home was purchased by Eric Allyn and Margaret O’Connell.
Allyn’s family founded medical device company Welch Allyn, based in New York. A member of the Allyn family also in August purchased a 1,300-acre ranch near Clark for $7.65 million.
“They really loved the location of the home and it’s ability to be so close to ski-in, ski-out,” said Josie Tolan, a broker with SSIR who represented the buyer as part of broker Lisa Olson’s team.
The home is located on the Temple Knolls cul-de-sac, just off Burgess Creek Road, and was built through the course of 18 months using local builders and contractors.
Seller Catherine Zdeblick worked with designer Lynn Barton Bier, architect Joe Patrick Robbins and builder Gary Cogswell, completing the home in 2005.
Highlights include robust wooden beams, some salvaged from an Oregon gold mine, seven fireplaces throughout the house and cozy window seats with clear views of the ski area.
“Though it’s expensive, it’s not pretentious,” Tolan said. “It definitely was built with love and was built to be a family home. Even though the square footage is large, it doesn’t feel like it.”
