The world’s fastest moguls skier, Jaelin Kauf, grabbed yet another World Cup victory in Saturday’s dual moguls event in Val St. Come, Quebec.
Freestyle athletes were faced with temperatures hitting minus-3 degrees in the popular night race where Kauf and Olivia Giaccio, who both spent years training with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, managed to move on to the dual semifinals to face each other.
Kauf won the semifinal 18-17, the closest a dual can get, pitting her against Anastassiya Gordoko (Kazakhstan) in the big final. Giaccio took fourth, her best duals result of the season, after losing to France’s Perrine Laffont in the small final.
Utilizing her speed in the big final, Kauf pushed the limits in the bumps, forcing the 19-year-old Gordoko to try and keep up. Gordoko ultimately skied out for a DNF, leaving Kauf with her 10th-career World Cup victory and furthering her podium streak to six straight.
Kauf is focused this season on becoming a dual moguls world champion and wearing the yellow bib, which signifies that the skier is the active world No. 1. Kauf earned the yellow bib following a dominant win in Bakuriani, Georgia, to start the season. She placed second overall at Waterville on Jan. 25, but remained with the top ranking.
Saturday’s victory extended her lead at the top over Laffont, now by 60 points from just 20 points, heading into the weekend. Giaccio sits in ninth for duals.
Kauf and Giaccio also managed strong performances in Friday’s singles competition, sharing the podium in second and third, respectively.
Kauf had the fastest finals run by over a second, while Giaccio shined with the best aerial points. Giaccio currently is ranked No. 2 in the world in singles, 85 points behind Laffont. Kauf is not far behind, ranked fourth.
Next up for U.S. Freestyle Skiing is a World Cup at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah from Feb. 6-8.
